Position Overview.The Appalachian Producers Cooperative (APC) is a farmer-owned cooperative that is building a new, state-of-the-art, USDA inspected livestock processing facility located in Washington County, TN.-- The facility will process approximately 6,000 head annually of cattle, hogs, and lambs.-- The APC is seeking an experienced Production Manager who will oversee the pre-opening, opening, and daily management of the harvest and fabrication rooms for the facility.--Duties will include overseeing the facility's USDA Grant of Inspection process, installation of harvest/fabrication equipment, and the hiring and training of technicians.-- Once the facility is open, duties will include overseeing quality assurance, order fulfillment, workflow, staffing and scheduling, and maintaining compliance with Federal and State regulations. The successful candidate will develop processes that maximize safety, quality, productivity, and profitability. The Tri-Cities area of Northeast Tennessee offers a high quality of life with a low cost of living.-- The region boasts access to numerous outdoor recreation opportunities and convenience to urban amenities like arts, culture, dining, and entertainment.-- You can visit--https://movetojohnsoncity.com/ for more information about the region.ResponsibilitiesOversee compliance with USDA inspection process and regulations, OSHA regulations, EPA regulations, and ensure compliance with any third-party certification requirements (e.g. Animal Welfare Approved).Oversee the installation of harvest and fabrication floor equipment and work with industry representatives to learn the usage and basic maintenance of the equipment.Oversee all harvest and fabrication activities including but not limited to slaughter, boning, and breaking, finished fabrication, packing, labeling, sanitation, HACCP, and recordkeeping.Assist in the development and implementation of staff training programs for worker safety, food safety, sanitation, standard operating procedures, HACCP, humane livestock handling, and meat processing.--Establish worker and food safety as the top priority in training, equipment operation, facility workflow, job design, work assignments, and regulatory compliance.Ensure high performance standards in cleaning, sanitation, good manufacturing practices, regulatory compliance, HACCP procedures, and care for personal effects and workstations.Organize and manage daily production requirements to consistently meet customer expectations in a cost-conscious manner.Evaluate team performance and help staff work effectively and safely.--Address employees' issues or grievances and administer policies and procedures.Ensure completion of annual performance reviews for team members and provide ongoing performance feedback.Assist the General Manager with hiring for vacancies.Assist with financial performance, including budgeting, costing, expense and direct labor tracking.Lead and/or organize facility and equipment maintenance efforts through PM program, oversee in-house repairs when possible and outsource repairs when necessary.Manage inventory of necessary supplies (packaging supplies, labels, ingredients, etc.)TravelThis position will require 4-8 weeks of travel in the pre-opening stages to a facility in Charleston, WV for staff training.-- Accommodation provided and staff will return to East TN for the weekends.Very occasional overnight travel will be required annually for industry conferences.Qualifications, Education and ExperienceHigh school Diploma. (Required)Bachelor's or Master's degree in Meat Sciences or closely related degree in an applicable agriculture or food manufacturing field of study. (Preferred)Five+ years of experience in USDA Meat Processing plant. (Preferred)Two+ years of management experience in the meat processing industry. (Preferred)Two+ years of experience in HACCP work environment. (Required)HACCP Certification (Required within 6 months of selection)Commitment to personal growth, as well as the proven desire/ability to develop those around you to higher levels of responsibility. (Required)Professional communication experience (phone and email) including Excel, Microsoft word, QuickBooks, and industry-specific software platforms. (Preferred)Working knowledge of regulatory bodies and compliance expectations, including OSHA/Safety, FSIS/USDA, and EPA/Environmental. (Required)Interest and experience in value-added product development including flavor profiles, recipe development, cost modeling, retail marketing, etc.).
